Applied Theatre uses theatre as a medium for education, community development, and the pursuit of social justice. Applied Theatre involves the use of theatre and drama in a wide variety of nontraditional contexts and venues, such as in teaching, the justice system, health care, the political arena, community development, museums, and social service agencies. Through this program, I had the opportunity to implement applied theater across a broad spectrum of ages and abilities, including devising and performing an original interactive storytelling piece for kindergarten students in the New York City area in conjunction with the Creative Arts Teamʼs Early Learning Through the Arts program. I served as an apprentice/assistant director to the Creative Arts Teamʼs Youth Theatre program. I worked with long‑term care facilities to create documentary theater with senior citizens. My thesis work involved community‑based workshops with adult English‑language learners participating in the YMCA of Staten Islandʼs New Americans Welcome Center in partnership with The Broadway League.
